Jack Faris served in the U.S. Army from 1969 to 1971 at Ft. Lewis and Ft. Benning. He completed a Ph.D. In sociology at the University of Chicago. His dissertation examined basic combat training in the transition from the draft to the all-volunteer force. He is the author of a number of articles on military topics including “The Looking-Glass Army: Patriotism in the Post-Cold War Era,” in Armed Forces and Society.
